OBITUARY

Donald E. Kendziora, 57

Death came quite suddenly to the wonderful calm spirit of a man we knew as Don Kendziora. To his friends, Don was a gentle and patient man, filled with compassion—a truly good person. He was always ready to listen, ready with a laugh, advice if you asked, never judged anyone, and would give you anything you needed, without question. As a couple, Don and his spouse, Ray W. Clarke, were a role model for our community and reflected a positive example of commitment for 29 years. Friends appreciate the years that the two of them openly lived as a gay couple during the time when a homosexual relationship was not acceptable.

While keeping one foot on the ground for both of them, Don loved Ray's energy and the ability to keep up an exaggerated pace. Ray speaks of their relationship as 29 years built on love, respect, and the ability to compromise, as the most important ingredients:

"The early passion of 'courting days' grew into an all consuming passion to live a life of unity. Both of us strove to make our life one that was an example of commitment and perseverance. Our primary goal was to always project to those around us that we truly loved each other. Anything we did as a couple was to illustrate to all that life can be a blend of style; the aesthetic and the political."

Don died of a massive heart attack in his home on Wednesday, February 2nd. He was the son of the late Edward C. and Carol (née Apel) Kendziora. He is survived by his beloved long time companion, Ray W. Clarke.

Don was president of Action Travel-Cleveland, a member of the Institute of Certified Travel Agents, and an instructor of Ohio Travel Schools. He was formerly an Assistant to the Secretary of the State of Ohio, Ted W. Brown, during his administration.

Diverse in his interests, Don was a Master Mason in the Ellsworth Lodge, Cleveland, as well as the founder and newly elected president of the Log Cabin Club of Northeast Ohio, a gay Republican organization. He was also a member of the Ohio Speaker's Bureau and had worked for the

Ohio Board of Elections for many years. Don was a founder of the Take A Stand Foundation, an AIDS fundraising organization. As an avid Macintosh computer enthusiast he used his skills to support the various groups he believed in. Don's love of books and music was a major part of his life. He adored American operetta and German lieder. Don enjoyed and supported the Cleveland Orchestra, Art Song Festival, and Cleveland Ballet.

As a lifetime resident of Cleveland, Don graduated from Parma High School and Dennison University. He served in the U.S. Army for four years.

Memorials may be forwarded to the Art Song Festival of the Cleveland Institute of Music, 11021 East Blvd., Cleveland 44106, or the American Diabetes Assoc. of N.E. Ohio, 12434 Cedar Rd. Suite #10, Cleveland Hts., 44106.

A memorial service will be held on February 14 at 7 pm in Reinberger Chamber Hall, Severance Hall. A reception will follow in the Key Notes Club in Severance Hall. If you have not already RSVP'd, you must do so by 9 pm Sunday by calling 521-6310.
